In the past, FF games were pretty open-ended. FF12 and FF10 gave you the ability to teleport to all sorts of places. But it seems like SE wants to appeal to more people with the FF franchise. In the past FF games were only really played by FF players and RPG fans. Making FF13 a bit more linear sets up the story to be more easily told, making it overall, easier, which in turn brings more people to play, and in the end, it's about making more $$$. Also, I havn't played it but there comes a point where you DO get to explore a little bit. It makes sense, the higher the FF # number goes the easier it gets. I think they just want to appeal to a wider audience. But that shouldn't be a game breaker. FF13 has a fat ass number when it comes to production quality.
